Bicknoller Jubilee bell

A new ‘Jubilee’ treble bell for Bicknoller, West Somerset….

A new ‘Jubilee’ treble bell was blessed by Bishop George Cassidy at a very well attended special service in Bicknoller Church, West Somerset, on Sunday afternoon, 11 August 2013.  The oldest bell of the present five bells in the church tower at Bicknoller dates from the early 1400s.  Over the years (mainly in the 17th century) three more bells were added, and 20 years ago two villagers added a fifth bell.  The Church is most thankful for its enthusiastic band of active ringers from the village community, and as a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Appeal in 2012 it was Bicknoller villagers who raised sufficient funds, with the aid of contributions from the Bell Fund of the Bath and Wells Diocesan Association of Change Ringers, Bicknoller Church PCC, the Rotary Club of The Quantocks, Giraffe Media Ltd, and others, to buy a sixth bell through the Keltek Trust. The new treble originates from All Saints Church, High Wycombe, where a new ring of 12 bells has been installed.   Before the Bishop blessed the new addition to the present ring of five, he told in his thoughtful and encouraging address of his own experience of overseeing a repair of the broken clapper of ‘Great Paul’ when he was formerly a residentiary canon at St Paul’s Cathedral.  The service was followed by an excellently prepared tea in church and a closer inspection by many of the new treble bell.  Following the service and tea a quarter-peal was rung successfully by members of the Dunster Branch of the Bath and Wells Association to celebrate the event and to ‘ring out’ the five bells.  It is anticipated that the new treble bell will be raised and hung in the tower to make the ring of six during September 2013.
